Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder that was rooted in word associations as a young child. Ford became interested in acting during her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized the school was not suitable for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth attempt she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but in the meantime, she had already made her television debut in a 1991 episode in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly as well as a part of the company's 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy, which she began adding to her set in 1996, soon gained her attention.
