Annette Funicello was 13 years old when she was discovered by the studio's head Walt Disney dancing in an amateur production called Swan Lake in Fullerton California. Funicello at the expense of the other Mickey Mouse Club stars, joined the cast after the premiere season was over and didn't have to audition. Disney took the right choice as she quickly rose to become The Mickey Mouse Club's top performer with her own Adventures in Dairyland storyline. Funicello's potential as a teenage star was quickly realized. Disney hired Tutti Camerata an established arranger to aid her with her career as a recording artist. Annette, however, was not a fan of Funicello singing. Funicello grew to love recording albums and worked alongside Camerata who was one of the only forty-something arranging professionals of that era, who knew the basics of early music. The albums she released gradually got better, beginning with the third one, Annette Sings Anka, likely the first LP to consider the writing of a rock singer as repertoire. Funicello was featured as a character in Beach Party which was one of five hugely popular film series, which often featured Frankie Avalon. Although produced by AIP the scripts were personally reviewed and signed off by Walt Disney, in order to ensure that Annette's image was kept spotless.
